Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii 25th Anniversary Kahala Mall Celebration
HONOLULU – Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii (RMHC-HI) has announced a fun anniversary event to take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 9 at Kahala Mall. RMHC-HI staff and board members will be there along with Ronald McDonald, who will perform a special show, meet everybody, and pose with folks for photos. For the keiki, there will be face painting, balloon animals, a Father’s Day craft, coloring and a variety of fun games. There will also be a performance by Jody Kamisato & ‘Uke’s Rising Stars.
The RMHC-HI representatives will be sharing information about the Ronald McDonald House program, which each year provides a home-away-from-home on Oahu for hundreds of island families who need to travel here for treatment of a child’s serious illness or injury.
The charity is inviting everyone to stop by to learn, laugh and show your support for RMHC-HI, as it marks its 25th anniversary. Since opening in 1987, it has provided “home-away-from-home” for the families of nearly 10,000 seriously ill children from the neighbor islands, Guam, Saipan and other Pacific islands who came to Honolulu for the medical care they need. In a quarter of a century, this has amounted to a total of about 100,000 nights of lodging.

Built with the love and support of a caring community – which donated thousands of hours of volunteer time and four years of planning and fundraising before its opening 25 years ago – the 10-bedroom Ronald McDonald House is a haven where families can share their concerns, spend quiet time with their loved ones, and find support and comfort from others who are going through similar experiences. It fosters a nurturing environment that encourages parent-to-parent and family-to-family support. Some families have come for a short while; others have had lengthy stays. Many have celebrated successful recoveries. Others could only cherish whatever time remained to them.
RMHC-HI also operates a second Ronald McDonald House with seven bedrooms on Oahu Avenue in Manoa Valley, and the Ronald McDonald House Family Room at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, which receives nearly 9,000 visitors each year.
A third facility is an in-hospital respite center – the Ronald McDonald House Family Room – which serves immediate family members of inpatient children at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children (KMCWC), giving the highest priority to those families with children in the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units. The Family Room enables RMHC-HI to assist Oahu families.
