Treat Your Keiki to a New Happy Meal
HONOLULU – Starting January 20, McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii will launch a new Happy Meal that automatically includes a serving of fruit and provides parents and keiki with nutritional choices for a well-balanced meal. The new Happy Meal is being introduced nationwide in support of McDonald’s recently announced “Commitments to Offer Improved Nutrition Choices,” which strives to help customers make nutrition-based choices whether visiting McDonald’s or another food establishment.
The new Happy Meal includes Apple Slices (¼ cup or ½ serving) as a side to the choice of a Hamburger, Cheeseburger or Chicken McNuggets®, and choice of beverage, including fat-free chocolate milk and 1% low fat white milk. In addition to Apple Slices, the meal will automatically come with new smaller size French Fries (1.1 oz). Customers can also choose to request two portions of apples in lieu of fries.
“By introducing the new Happy Meal, we hope to support parents in encouraging their kids to eat a balanced meal that is both enjoyable and good for them,” said Veronica Kaneko, president and managing director of McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii. “McDonald’s is committed to providing many nutritional choices to its customers and we are excited to do so in this kid-appropriate meal.”
The new Happy Meal is the latest example of McDonald’s ongoing menu evolution. More Happy Meal fruit and vegetable choices are under development and expected to roll out over the next few years.
McDonald’s has also supported the Council of Better Business Bureau’s Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative since 2006 involving a voluntary Food Pledge to only advertise products to kids that represent healthier dietary choices. As part of its national sodium reduction efforts, McDonald’s reduced it’s Chicken McNuggets sodium content by more than 20 percent since 2003, and recently reduced the sodium in the most of its chicken menu items by10 percent.
