dck Pacific Construction Helps Target Renovate Blanche Pope Elementary School Library

HONOLULU - The effort to give the library at Blanche Pope Elementary School a complete makeover received a lot of help from the community. More than 150 people from various Hawaii companies have donated their time and talent to transform the Waimanalo school library, which was selected by Target Corporation, in partnership with The Heart of America Foundation, for the fully paid renovation work. An unveiling ceremony was held today at the school, as the library was unveiled to students, faculty, parents and community members.

Among those doing the heavy lifting was dck pacific construction, LLC, a dck worldwide company. Project Manager William Maguire said about 25 dck pacific employees worked on demolishing the existing flooring; installed bookshelves, desks, partitions and furniture; and hung various wall treatments including tack boards, inspirational signage, picture frames and plaques. Maguire estimates dck pacific donated 500 hours of labor on the project over the past several weeks.

“dck pacific is really proud of the generosity and kokua provided by Jade Painting and Alii Flooring. The new wall colors and vibrant flooring are what really makes the renovation sparkle,” Maguire said. “Both companies were eager to participate and have done a great job for the school’s library and kids. Of course, here at dck pacific, we are happy to lend a hand to Target and join in their commitment to local communities as we share an interest in providing opportunities for Hawaii’s kids.”

Blanche Pope is the first school in the state to receive a Target School Library Makeover, a program which seeks to help children read proficiently by the end of third grade and put more kids on the path to graduation. The library will feature thousands of new books. In addition, each student and their siblings will receive seven new books to take home.

Roger Peters, Executive Vice President and General Manager of dck pacific, said he was happy to have his employees step up and help out with the library makeover. “dck pacific believes in being a good community partner, especially when it comes to education,” Peters said. “The Target project aims to enrich students’ lives by giving them a refreshed environment with increased opportunities for learning.”

dck pacific’s other community service includes hosting an annual golf tournament where more than $200,000 was donated over the past 15 years to charities, schools or nonprofits, rebuilding a home for disadvantaged kids on “Make a Difference Day,” and participating in charity walks.
